Large Stand-Off Magnetometry (MMM Technology)
Who we are ?
Large Stand-Off Magnetometry (MMM Technology)
Petromaster is the sole service provider for this technology in the GCC. The system is based on the detection of Self Magnetic Leakage Fields (SMLF), which arise in ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials due to the accumulation of high-density dislocations, enabling detection of High Stress Concentration Zones (SCZs).
This technology can be used on both contact and non-contact bases to assess internal and external conditions of ferromagnetic piping and pipelines. It is suitable for bare, insulated, and buried pipelines. When combined with Risk Based Inspection (RBI), it helps optimize selection of On-Stream Inspection (OSI) locations for targeted monitoring.
Metal Magnetic Memory (MMM) refers to the residual magnetization formed in components and welded joints during fabrication and operation. Most failures originate in Stress Concentration Zones (SCZs), which are areas of maximum stress compared to nominal conditions. These zones are primary locations for corrosion, fatigue, and creep damage.
Early detection of SCZs is essential for evaluating equipment integrity, preventing failures, and estimating remaining service life. MMM utilizes natural magnetization and its after-effect, appearing as magnetic memory of metal under stress and structural change.
The method detects residual magnetization formed during manufacturing, cooling, or during operation due to irreversible changes in local magnetization caused by stress concentration and material degradation.
International Standards
- ISO 24497-1:2007(E) — Non-Destructive Testing: Metal Magnetic Memory — Vocabulary
- ISO 24497-2:2007(E) — General Requirements
- ISO 24497-3:2007(E) — Inspection of Welded Joints
Applications of MMM Technology
- Non-contact inspection of buried pipelines
- Detection using fluxgate sensor systems
- Analysis of stress-strain condition of pipelines
- Boiler and furnace tube diagnostics
- Express inspection of pressure vessels
- Steam turbine blade diagnostics
- Corrosion under insulation (CUI) detection
- Early fatigue damage detection
- Critical equipment condition assessment
Advantages of MMM Technology
- Detects early failure signs in Stress Concentration Zones (SCZs)
- High sensitivity to microstructural degradation and fatigue initiation
- Passive technique — no external magnetization required
- No special surface preparation needed
- Reduces inspection cost by targeting high-risk areas only
